#Row80 Check In 7/31/11

As some of you know, it's been a rough week. Turns out my doxie Sammy didn't have a bug. He took a turn for the worse Thursday afternoon, and after a series of blood work and x-rays, a foreign body was discovered. He had surgery on Friday, where the vet found a lot of his bedding (an old towel, because they chew everything up) wrapped in his intestines like rope. She spent over three hours getting it out. There were also ulcers on his bowels from the mess going on inside him. He made it through surgery fine, but we're not out of the woods yet. There are chances for infections and other setbacks, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.

We went to visit yesterday, and he was happy to see us as well as his bestie, our other mini doxie Maggie. Seeing him after the surgery helped.

Needless to say, the worry didn't play well for my writing. I was feeling down anyway, so Sammy's issues were like icing on the cake. I feel so guilty because I knew he was chewing up the bedding, but I didn't realize how much he was actually eating. I found scraps around, so I just assumed the vast majority was being left out. Should have known better.

I did manage to get a fair amount of editing done on Light and Dark. I'm working on some of the more in depth suggestions from my critique partner as well as really focusing on 'show, don't tell.' And dialogue tags. Those are a biggie of mine.

The Prophet is still stalled. It's an exciting idea I know I can write, but I'm having trouble getting started. I have notes all over the place, and it's like I've forgotten how to organize. Hopefully I get that straightened out soon.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the support on Twitter and Facebook this week. Having you guys to talk to has really helped, and it means a lot:)

Special thanks to the wonderful Tiffany White for pimping my blog on Jenny Hansen's great post. Check out Tiffany's post about the Texas Kiss and Kill Murders - a creepy true story!

How did your week turn out?

Dogs, like anyone else, can be surprisingly secretive when they know they're doing something they shouldn't. Don't beat yourself up. Once you realised he was ill you took him to get treatment. They're like kids, you can't watch over them every minute of the day.

And congrats on the editing progress. Just keep making notes on the other story. If necessary, just dive in and see what happens :)

Stacy, so sorry about your little Doxie! I've been through surgery with a pet before and it is stressful. Fingers crossed for you all.

That is great that you were still able to get some work done - it's hard to produce anything, even edits under that kind of stress.

Hugs and hopes heading your way!

Sammy is definitely a little sneak. He's got that down pat. It's just one of those things where hindsight is 20/20. I am to the point where I may dive in on The Prophet and see what happens. Sometimes I work best that way.
Thanks!

Amber
Thank you. I'm hoping he will be out of the woods before. It's so stressful not being able to do anything.
Thanks for the encouragement!

My first dog used to eat everything when we left her home alone. Once she ate a rug, sheet rock, and a bunch of other things including a tube of zinc oxide. The vet said the zinc oxide saved her life. We were lucky there. And after that vet visit, she stopped eating things. I wonder why dogs eat strange things to begin with. I hope Sammy has a full recovery soon.

Wow! Your dog sounds like a handful. All 3 of our dogs will chew, so we have to keep toys put up unless we're playing with them. Sammy worked his way into the cabinets under the sink once (before Grace came along) and got into Miracle Grow, but we got him to the vet right away.

Thanks!

Stacy, sorry to hear about Sammy. I hope he gets better quickly and can return home soon. Some days we all feel down...thank goodness for friends, right? Keep us updated. Hang in there!

I hope Sammy gets all better and that the little rug-rat learns his lesson! I'm not sure I would have even been able to edit were it my baby, so good job. Good luck with this coming week and organizing The Prophet!

Thanks. If all goes well he'll be home Wednesday or Thursday. Yes, thank goodness for friends.

Angela
Thanks, me too. That's my biggest worry: keeping him from doing it again.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Sorry about your dog. I am glad that the vet figured out the problem, and hopefully Sammy will be much better soon.

Good luck with the organization. It is hard to take all of those great ideas and get them into the right framework. Best wishes on ROW80!

I have high hopes for Sammy to make a full recovery. You did something as soon as you understood there was a problem, so there's nothing to feel guilty about.

I think we all feel discouraged in our writing sometime. Light and Dark is a good book. I'm always entertained when I read it. And we all have our pet things we do. Pop goes the weasel! LOL

I ended up having to shelve Murder in Black Water until I finished your critiques on Murder in the Pineywoods. So I guess we're in the same boat?

Keep moving on. Baby steps make progress.

Thanks, me too. You're right, organization is hard, and it's one of my weaker points. I need to really work at it.

Catie
I hope so. They said he's doing well this morning, and I'll be visiting him this afternoon.

LOL, thanks so much for the encouragement. It means a lot to me. Nah, you shelved MIB for a really great reason;)

I had a cat with a sweet tooth for plastic bags so I've been down your path and feel your pain. I'm glad your pup is doing better. It's tough to write when you are emotionally filled up with other facets of life.

Wow, plastic bags? Crazy animals. Thanks so much for the support.
